What would a canopy of salt water do to our temperatures and climate? This would create a greenhouse effect scenario, not a greenhouse effect in the negative sense, as in too much CO2, but in a positive sense, as in stable temperate global temperatures with high O2 concentrations. Temperate temperatures on the surface of the earth would mean no polar ice caps, no deserts, and abundant lush green tropical vegetation uniformly growing around the globe.

Before the Flood of Gen. 7, there would have been massive amounts of water stored above the atmosphere in the canopy and stored below the crust of the earth in deep caverns (the source of the 40 days and nights of rain); oceans wouldn’t exist, only smaller seas. Let’s journey through these claims, and see if there is support for this pre-Flood utopia.

Does the Bible support temperate temperatures before the Flood? Yes. Gen. 3:7: “Then the eyes of both of them (Adam and Eve) were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.” That is correct—Adam and Eve lived in such a temperate climate that they were naked every day and night of the year until they sinned and covered their loins (private parts). Notice that they didn’t put on jackets for winter or clothes after they sinned. They merely covered their reproductive organs. Therefore, the climate didn’t change. Their eyes were spiritually open to the knowledge of good and evil. Also, after and during God’s creation, He kept saying, “It was good.” Deserts and polar ice caps are bad for the growth of vegetation and for living beings to thrive. Also, the change of seasons from cool springs to hot summers would have brought destructive and harmful tornadoes, which didn’t occur before the Flood because of the relatively constant temperate global temperatures. Additionally, the change of season from hot summer months to cooler fall months would have spawned many hurricanes, which didn’t occur before the Flood because of the relatively constant temperate global temperatures. One cannot argue that tornadoes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters occurred on the globe before the fall of Adam and Eve because those conditions result in death and destruction. This is clarified in Romans 5:12, that death did not enter creation until Adam sinned.[expander_maker more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]

Do evolutionary scientists support the notion that at some point, there were temperate global temperatures? Yes, allegedly during the Cambrian explosion of life, oxygen levels were high enough and temperatures stable enough for life to thrive and eventually lead to dinosaurs and a great variety and complexity of creatures; there was a brief (in geological terms) period of optimal temperatures that allowed life to thrive. Optimal conditions for life is a foundation for evolution. Though we differ on when, what, and how of the origins of life, evolutionists believe that at the spawning of the first life, a single-cell organism occurred because conditions were optimal for life to begin. The optimal conditions concept is another common ground between the two hypotheses. Evolutionists believe there were periods of optimal conditions for life, and creationists believe that there were optimal conditions as well before the Flood. For this chapter, that optimal condition included modest temperatures and climate before the Flood.

Think about the benefits for living beings; there would be no wasted energy to warm a cold body, no shivers and goose bumps, and no need to cool an overheated body with perspiration.

Does the Bible support the scenario of no polar ice caps and no deserts before the Flood? Yes. The existence of polar ice caps and deserts creates global changes in temperature from one region to another on the earth. These differences in temperature from different regions on the earth cause a global wind called the jet stream. When did the wind first occur? Immediately after the Flood of Gen. 8:1: “God caused a wind to pass over the earth.”

With the loss of the canopy of water resulting in the Flood, this would have significantly reduced atmosphere pressure and increased equatorial temperatures, which would have ended the mist rising from the ground globally. The mist was the only means of watering the ground, upon its demise came evaporation to form into clouds, which subsequently would have led to rainfall and rainbows. This is the hydrological cycle as we know it today. With a canopy of water hovering around the atmosphere, this would have increased atmospheric pressure significantly enough that evaporation of water from the earth would not have formed clouds, but a mist rising from the earth to water the whole earth. Probably, when the cool of the day occurred, then the moisture in the air would rest on the soil as dew. With no clouds, then there was no rain prior to the Flood. Gen. 2:5–6 “For the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.” Mist can also be translated to “flow.” However it is translated, the idea is the same. No hydrological cycle as we know it involving cloud formation and subsequent rain. That means no clouds and no rain before the Flood. With a mist rising from the ground to water the earth, there were no tornadoes, no hurricanes, no floods, no droughts, no lightning, and no hail. With the loss of the canopy of water and the subsequent reduction in atmospheric pressure, this allowed for cloud formation as the means for watering the ground, which subsequently led to hurricanes, tornadoes, hail, lightning, floods, droughts, and so forth. These weather events are a reminder of the curse of sin placed upon all creation.

With no clouds and no rain prior to the Flood, then there would have been no rainbows. This is why rainbows didn’t exist until after the Flood. Gen. 9 says that God set his rainbow in the sky as a covenant not to destroy life with flood waters again. With the loss of the canopy of water hovering around the atmosphere, this significantly reduced atmospheric pressure, allowing the formation of clouds and subsequently rain and light refraction from the raindrops to form rainbows in the sky.

Let that sink in for a moment. This is strong evidence that before the Flood, there were no winters, no summer, no cold, and no hot days of summer. In Gen. 1:14, when God finishes forming the sun, moon, and stars and says, “Let them be for signs and for seasons,” He uses the Hebrew word for seasons, which doesn’t mean spring, summer, fall, and winter. No—it means feasts and festivals and appointments of assembly.

The hydrological cycle bypassed clouds and rain and converted evaporation into a mist because of atmospheric pressure, and this is why there were no rainbows until after the Flood.
